I was walking through busy streets in Madrid and one cute and playfull puppy catch my eye. I come closer and he was so curious and happily comes to cuddle with me and say hi. I was giving him attention and he made my day, but then I take a look on the woman sitting on the floor on blankets. She was around 70 years old, with beautiful hat on her grey middle long hair, but from her eyes I saw the most warm and gorgeous look that I ever seen. From all her body and soul radiates positive energy and you can really feel she is amazing perosn. My empathy level raise up on 100% and that moment really touched me. I speak a little bit with her and exchange some words. She speaks about puppy with sparkle in her eyes and she said she found a puppy on the street and that probably some bad people kick him away from house. Now they are best friends. They don't have home, but have each other. Both of them have good heart and they are very firnedly.
Somehow, it was hard to go away from them. I started thinking my whole way to home about homeless pepole and how it is such a huge problem. Most of the time homeless people were once ordinary employed people, but somehow after combination of circumstanses they end up this way. Sometimes it's technological excess on their work and they don't have their own real estate. Or family. Or friends that they can go to. Sometimes it's woman running away from violent husband. Sometimes it's earthquake. Sometimes is addiction to gambling or drugs. Or mental illness. But let's make it clear that in this cases people obviously have big traumas and hard life and probably childhood. So, what I wanted to say is EVERYBODY deserves respect. And empathy. No judging. Because, it can happen to everyone. Maybe you are next, you never know what life brings to you. So start to express gratitude for your living space. Start being aware of all amazing benefits you are having in your life, but took for granted. I am also selfish sometimes and often seeing bad a lot of things and thinking negative. But then I change my perspective.
My journey started when I was around 18 years old. I was still going to high school and I lied to my parents that I am going in Zagreb (capital of Croatia) to visit friends, but actually I went by myself to Budapest, nobody knew. I don't want to speak about details, but I didn't have a place to sleep, because of last minute cancelation and didn't have a lot of money to rent another place. I decided to spend all day and night in the city and come back next day with bus or train. It was freaking cold. It was middle of the week, so nothing special happened at night time, everything was closed around 00:00. It was freaking cold, so I found bus station with empty buses and went into one, but soon security come. I found a car garage, where it was less cold, but then police come and say I can't be there. I still don't know why and I think Hungary is crazy country, but well...At the end I found underground and a lot of homeless people there. I was shocked and really sad. I watched their faces, I saw pain in their eyes...They were lying on the blankets. One older man was sitting alone next to them. I remembered that I have some food in the bag, so I went to man and give it to him. He was so happy, but first he didn't want to accept that. I forget about it and start to focus on something else, listening to music on my phone etc. But then he appears with food from barkery and give it to me. I explained that I am not homeless and say he will need it more, but he didnt' want to give in. That moment was relaly touching for me and I wasn't sure anymore if I am happy or sad. People who have NOTHING are ready to share, but because of people who don't know what to do with their millions anymore this people are on the streets? And I don't mean ordinary people who succeed in their careers. Usually, this kind of people love to help others. But politicians, people behind the shadow, people and families who rule the world.
So, next time you start to complain that you don't have a nice car, that your parents didn't buy you an Iphone when you were teenager, or complain you are hungry while your fridge is full, please be aware how someone is praying everyday for the things you took for granted. Day by day practice gratitude, even for material and non- material things. December is full of lights, everybody is going to visit their families, often splurge on expensive gifts and eat excessively, but we often focus on wrong things instead on power of inner light. A lot of people are actually sleeping on cold, while their body is shivering and don't have place to take a shower. Please, be aware of that next time you look at homeless people with a contemptuous look. Who are you to judge them?
